A decade ago today, the tragic accident that shook the world of sports would be registered as Michael Schumacher, while skiing in Meribel, would fall, suffering severe head injuries.
It was December 29, 2013, when the life of the Formula 1 legend would change completely, and since that day, information about his health has been very scarce due to the family’s choice to preserve privacy. A decade after the accident in the French Alps, what is the legacy of Michael Schumacher, and above all, what has happened to him over time? What remains of him after a whole decade? Has anyone taken over the throne that Schumi held?
THE THRONE – In the span of a decade (or less, in seven years), Lewis Hamilton completed his collection of world titles, a cycle that began in 2008, a year before Schumacher’s return to Mercedes, equaling Michael’s seven championship titles before stopping at the peak moment by Max Verstappen. The chances for “Sir” Lewis to surpass Schumacher seem very limited. The stage has now been “stolen” by Red Bull’s Dutch driver, who continues to set records, but will Verstappen (three-time world champion) be able to reach the eighth F1 title? Certainly, for Verstappen, it won’t be as straightforward as this season, but he has all the “cards” and a solid position to prove it. However, Hamilton remains in the race, awaiting a more competitive Mercedes next year.
FAMILY HEIR – Mick, Schumacher’s 24-year-old son, who was present in Meribel during the accident, competed in Formula 1 with the Haas team in the 2021 and 2022 seasons, but without being able to make a difference on the track. Mick is still the third driver for Mercedes (after a season with Ferrari) and it is not unimaginable to see him again in F1. Meanwhile, Mick is keeping in shape with the Alpine team in the World Endurance Championship (WEC), preferring a starting role in an official team.
FERRARI – In Maranello, they are also awaiting Schumacher’s successor, a driver who can rise to the top of Formula 1. Five consecutive titles with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004. Despite the detached success in 2007 from Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari continues to await the title and a winning cycle that has been missing for 20 years. In this time period, those who have tried include Felipe Massa, alongside Michael Schumacher in his final season at Maranello. Continuing with Sebastian Vettel, Fernando Alonso, and more recently with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
